The subject is draped in intricate, stylized robes that occupy the majority of the frame, utilizing negative space to emphasize the elegance of the posture. Calligraphic text flows vertically alongside the figure, integrating the brushed ink aesthetic of the Edo period directly into the visual rhythm of the portrait. The palette relies on muted, organic earth tones and deep, saturated ink blacks that anchor the figure against the background.

Meaning & Symbolism

Attributed to the artistic output of Sumiyoshi Gukei between 1674 and 1692, this portrait honors the Sanjurokkasen, or the Thirty-six Poetic Immortals. These figures represent the zenith of Japanese waka poetry. By isolating this specific immortal, the design preserves the reverence held for classical literary masters whose influence bridged the gap between the aristocratic court culture of the Heian period and the flourishing arts of the 17th century. The inclusion of the original poetic inscriptions serves as both an aesthetic anchor and a direct link to the lyrical history of Japan.

On the Sticker

The kiss-cut allows the fluid, organic silhouette of the historical portrait to stand alone as a singular icon, free from the constraints of a rigid border. This design functions as a portable fragment of art history, with the die-cut edges tracing the refined contours of the subject’s robes and posture, allowing the portrait to integrate seamlessly onto the covers of journals, sketchbooks, or laptop shells.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788531158
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
