The hawks dominate the frame, their forms anchored by the textured, asymmetrical branches they inhabit. The background remains minimal and airy, utilizing negative space to emphasize the muscularity of the birds' plumage and the intensity of their gazes, creating a balanced tension between the static posture of the animals and the flowing lines of the ink.

Meaning & Symbolism

Soga Nichokuan, a master of the Soga school, utilized the hawk as a recurring motif to signify martial prowess and sharp-sighted authority. During the mid-17th century, such imagery moved beyond simple naturalism, serving as a status symbol for the samurai class who valued the raptor's predatory focus and discipline. This piece reflects the transition toward a more decorative yet technically rigorous aesthetic, capturing the essence of the bird through restrained, confident strokes that prioritize character over dense detail.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut decal, the aggressive, jagged outlines of the hawks and their perches are preserved in the final cut. The artwork functions as an isolated graphic element, allowing the silhouette to act as a standalone icon against any flat, indoor surface. The tight perimeter cut strips away the excess composition, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the strength of the brushwork and the intensity of the hawks' expressions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/soga-nichokuan-hawks-mid-17th-century-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788531906
https://thestickerspace.com/products/soga-nichokuan-hawks-mid-17th-century-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
