A near-black surround frames a pale ochre ground, and the mounting is edged with a wave-patterned brocade in slate blue and gold brown. Ink grey carries the shoots and the sketched reeds or grass, with the emphasis on fine, unhurried line. Cursive kana calligraphy runs alongside the painting, so the image reads as both picture and writing.

Meaning & Symbolism

In East Asian symbolism, bamboo shoots stand for resilience, rapid growth, and perseverance, and the ability to bend without breaking under harsh conditions. The swift, upright rise of a shoot was read as youthful vigor, scholarly integrity, and moral strength, which made the subject central to the literati tradition of educated elites. Nanpo was a leading literary figure of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, celebrated as a master kyoka poet and satirical writer. He also painted and practised calligraphy, accomplishments expected of a cultured intellectual of his day.

Shaped to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of the artwork itself, so the scroll's silhouette becomes the sticker's edge and the tall form of the shoots stays intact. The design is made for smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops, journals, and windows, where a vertical image can be placed and seen up close. It suits collectors of Edo-period art and anyone who keeps a shelf of bamboo-themed objects.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/shokusanjin-ta-nanpo-bamboo-shoots-1820-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788533321
https://thestickerspace.com/products/shokusanjin-ta-nanpo-bamboo-shoots-1820-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
