Cream paper forms the ground, and the dominant colour is ink black, with seal red marking the artist's presence. The brushwork is loose and deliberate, so each robed figure reads through gesture and line rather than fine detail, and the restraint of the palette keeps the eye on the rhythm of the strokes.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Luohans, or arhats, are the enlightened disciples of the historical Buddha, revered across East Asian Buddhism as guardians and protectors of the faith. They stand for steadfast spiritual endurance, ascetic devotion, and the attainment of nirvana through disciplined practice. Painted in the early Qing, the scroll shows Shitao engaging traditional Buddhist subject matter in his own individualistic manner, and its place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection keeps that legacy in public view.

Tracing the Scroll onto Your Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the brush-drawn figures and the fall of the scroll's ink become the shape itself rather than a rectangle around them. Each piece carries the calligraphic silhouette directly onto the surface it is placed on, which suits collectors who want a historic handscroll image to live where they look every day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/shitao-zhu-ruoji-the-sixteen-luohans-dated-1667-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788533973
https://thestickerspace.com/products/shitao-zhu-ruoji-the-sixteen-luohans-dated-1667-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
