A gnarled tree with a twisted trunk anchors the scene, while seated and standing robed figures move through the space between rocky outcrops studded with shrubs. A small pavilion sits among the rocks, and a single seal red stamp adds the only warm note to the monochrome field. The line carries the image: figures are built from quick, varied strokes rather than fixed contours.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Luohans are arhats, enlightened disciples of the historical Buddha who vowed to remain in the world to protect and propagate the dharma until the arrival of the future Buddha, Maitreya. Their presence signals spiritual authority, disciplined meditation and the endurance of enlightenment. Shitao, also known as Zhu Ruoji, was a member of the Ming royal family who lived through the dynastic transition, and his art wrestles with personal identity and historical loss. This 1667 work shows his early command of traditional ink technique, before his later move toward more individual and spontaneous styles.

Made for the Sticker Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own design, so the scroll's figures, tree and pavilion read as a single shape rather than a framed rectangle. The sticker suits a collector who wants a slice of Qing-era ink painting on a personal object, with the Luohans placed where they can be seen up close, the way the handscroll invites a viewer to lean in and contemplate.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/shitao-zhu-ruoji-the-sixteen-luohans-dated-1667-v10-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788002198
https://thestickerspace.com/products/shitao-zhu-ruoji-the-sixteen-luohans-dated-1667-v10-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
