A small insect rests on the vine, a detail that rewards close looking. The palette stays restrained: ink grey for the foliage and branches, a pale grey wash for depth, and a warm buff ground that gives the whole image its aged, paper-toned warmth. Wood brown and a pale mount frame the scene, so the eye moves slowly from leaf to tendril to fruit.

Meaning & Symbolism

In East Asian art, squirrels and grapevines together signal abundance, fertility, and the wish for many prosperous descendants. The vine's full fruit answers the agile energy of the animal, setting enduring vitality against quick, playful movement. Zeshin (1807–1891) was a towering figure of the late Edo and Meiji periods, celebrated for painting and lacquerwork alike, and for renewing traditional Japanese aesthetics while engaging closely with classical themes. This piece carries that versatility into a small, observant scene of everyday nature.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the squirrel and vine can stand on their own without a surrounding border. The design is best seen up close, where the ink lines, the wash, and the insect on the vine can be read one by one. Set it on a journal, a laptop lid, or a window pane, and the painting becomes a small companion to whatever it sits beside.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/shibata-zeshin-squirrel-on-grapevine-19th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788538083
https://thestickerspace.com/products/shibata-zeshin-squirrel-on-grapevine-19th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
