Its form is the whole composition: the muscles, the set of the shoulders and the braced stance define the image. The design uses neutral tones throughout, so the sculptural modelling of the figure is what the eye follows, and the die-cut edge traces the figure's outline.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Greek myth Atlas was condemned to hold up the sky, and in architecture such figures, known as atlantes, take on that burden in stone. Pierre Puget, the seventeenth-century French sculptor and architect from Marseille, worked in this tradition, and the Toulon figure ties classical myth to civic building. Its meaning lies in the strength of the civic space it supports.

A Cut Figure on a Surface

A die-cut sticker is cut to the silhouette of the figure, so the carving appears on the surface without a border. Placed on a laptop lid, a notebook cover or a journal, the figure carries its weight across the flat surface. The vinyl is rated for indoor and outdoor use, so the figure can go wherever a sculpture would be seen up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/puget-pierre-sculptures-atlas-from-the-door-of-the-hotel-de-ville-at-toulon-artwork-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-18353022932769606259-front.webp?v=1789618689
https://thestickerspace.com/products/puget-pierre-sculptures-atlas-from-the-door-of-the-hotel-de-ville-at-toulon-artwork-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
