Howard, Officer Of The Federal Army (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

Portrait Of Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard, Officer Of The Federal Army (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A monochrome portrait of Major General Oliver O. Howard, a bearded Union officer photographed in a double-breasted uniform in the 1860s.

Visual Elements & Composition

Light grey, charcoal and black make up the photograph, giving it the tonal range of a nineteenth-century print. The figure is shown in three-quarter view, and his uniform dominates the frame, with the double-breasted coat, its buttons and shoulder straps standing out against the darker ground. A belt and buckle cross the figure's waist. The dark border of the vertical image holds the whole portrait together, and the composition is centred on the man's face and bearing.

Meaning & Symbolism

Howard led Union troops through major campaigns of the American Civil War, including Chancellorsville and the Atlanta Campaign. After the war he led the Freedmen's Bureau, which gave his name a lasting place in the story of Reconstruction. The uniform and the steady, serious expression signal rank, discipline and resolve, the qualities a portrait of a senior officer was made to convey.

Printed Across a Surface

A die-cut sticker follows the shape of its artwork, so the figure becomes the sticker's own silhouette and the dark photograph border falls away. The matte surface suits a monochrome print, and the vinyl is rated for indoor and outdoor use, so the portrait can sit on a notebook, a laptop lid or a window.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/portrait-of-maj-gen-oliver-o-howard-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-45591127185968314949-front.webp?v=1790448550
https://thestickerspace.com/products/portrait-of-maj-gen-oliver-o-howard-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
