Mcpherson, Officer Of The Federal Army (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A bearded officer in a dark military coat looks away in three-quarter view, in a formal black-and-white portrait of Union Major General James B. McPherson.

Visual Elements & Composition

Soft greys and charcoal dominate the image, with the deepest blacks in the uniform and off-white highlights in the face and collar. The portrait is framed as a tall vertical rectangle, with the figure set slightly off-centre. Shoulder insignia and the epaulettes on the coat mark his rank. The photographic tonal range gives the image its gravity, with no colour to distract from the uniform and the face.

Meaning & Symbolism

McPherson served as a key commander in the Western Theater under General William T. Sherman, and he led Union forces through the Vicksburg and Atlanta campaigns. He was killed in action at the Battle of Atlanta in July 1864. The insignia and uniform signal his rank and his place within the Union military hierarchy, and the formal pose reflects the gravitas that such portraits were meant to convey. The image is a record of a commander whose strategic skill mattered to the war effort of the 1860s.

On the Die-Cut Sticker

A die-cut sticker is cut around its own outline, so the edge of the portrait follows the coat and shoulders rather than sitting in a plain border. The monochrome tones suit a smooth, flat surface where the face and insignia can be seen at close range, and the matte finish keeps the grey tones even.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/portrait-of-maj-gen-james-b-mcpherson-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-26102457481416944399-front.webp?v=1790450523
https://thestickerspace.com/products/portrait-of-maj-gen-james-b-mcpherson-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
