Canby, Officer Of The Federal Army (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A full-length black-and-white portrait of Major General Edward R. S. Canby, standing in a long dark frock coat with his hat held at his side.

Visual Elements & Composition

Light grey and charcoal black make up almost all of the image, with off-white giving the highlights on the uniform and the studio backdrop. The figure stands full length at the centre of the frame, his long dark military frock coat dominating the composition. A marble pedestal and a painted balustrade form the backdrop, a conventional studio setting of the period. The hat is held at his side, and the rectangular plate of the photograph gives the layout its formal proportions. There is no lettering.

Meaning & Symbolism

Edward R. S. Canby was an officer of the Federal Army, the Union forces of the American Civil War, and rose to the rank of major general. The frock coat and the upright stance were the marks of the professional officer, and studio portraits of this kind were made to record rank and service for family and public use. The photograph belongs to the 1860s, the decade of the war, and its restrained tone reflects the formality of the era.

Cut to the Figure

A die-cut sticker follows the outline of the figure, so the silhouette of the coat and the edge of the pedestal are trimmed as they appear in the photograph. The matte finish suits a monochrome image, keeping the greys soft rather than glossy, and the water-resistant vinyl is suitable for indoor and outdoor placement on very smooth surfaces such as glass.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/portrait-of-maj-gen-edward-r-s-canby-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-75828747486368662542-front.webp?v=1790452424
https://thestickerspace.com/products/portrait-of-maj-gen-edward-r-s-canby-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
