Averell, Officer Of The Federal Army (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

Portrait Of Brig. Gen. William W. Averell, Officer Of The Federal Army (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

This sticker reproduces a studio portrait of Brigadier General William Woods Averell, a Union officer of the American Civil War, shown in a dark military coat against a pale grey backdrop.

Visual Elements & Composition

The photograph is black and white, with a light grey backdrop that sets the figure apart. The dark grey uniform fills most of the frame, cut by a double row of buttons down the coat and an officer's insignia on the shoulder strap. The subject wears a moustache and holds a composed, direct expression. The layout is a vertical portrait with the figure at the centre, and there is no text or numerals in the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

Averell, born in 1832, was a Union general known for his cavalry leadership, particularly in the western theatre of the war, and he took part in campaigns in Virginia and West Virginia. Portraits of officers from this period were made to record military service and to honour the rank held, and the uniform and insignia carry that meaning here. The photograph belongs to the visual record of Union military leadership in the 1860s.

On the Die-Cut Sticker

A die-cut sticker can be cut along a custom outline, so the figure of the officer can be trimmed close to the edge of his coat and separated from the backdrop. The water-resistant vinyl has a matte finish, which suits the soft greys of an old photograph. Fine details placed close together are cut as one shape, so the broad forms of the uniform and face carry the portrait best.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/portrait-of-brig-gen-william-w-averell-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-20830831446385741309-front.webp?v=1790460277
https://thestickerspace.com/products/portrait-of-brig-gen-william-w-averell-officer-of-the-federal-army-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
