Johnson's Mill On The Appomattox Near Campbell's Bridge; Soldiers Standing On Rocks In The Stream (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A black and white photograph from 1865 showing a brick mill beside the Appomattox River, with a group of soldiers standing on rocks in the rapids.

Visual Elements & Composition

The photograph is in greyscale, with mid grey, light grey, charcoal and off-white tones carrying the image. A multi-storey brick mill with a waterwheel stands on the riverbank, and a group of men is placed on the rocks in the rushing water. Deciduous trees line the bank, and the interplay of water, stone and masonry defines the frame. The image has no colour, so the textures of the rock and the water do much of the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

The photograph was taken by Tim O'Sullivan in 1865, a year that closed the American Civil War. It records the Appomattox River near Petersburg, Virginia, at Johnson's Mill and near Campbell's Bridge, with soldiers placed within the landscape. As a document of the era, it stands as a plain, observational record of the war's environment and the men who moved through it.

Cut to the Outline

A die-cut sticker follows the exact contour of the artwork, so the scene sits on its surface as one clean shape with no backing border. The vinyl is water-resistant and suited to indoor and outdoor use, and the matte finish keeps the grey tones quiet, which suits a documentary photograph.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/petersburg-va-vicinity-johnsons-mill-on-the-appomattox-near-campbells-bridge-soldiers-standing-on-rocks-in-the-stream-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-33918276857580026232-fro.webp?v=1790467599
https://thestickerspace.com/products/petersburg-va-vicinity-johnsons-mill-on-the-appomattox-near-campbells-bridge-soldiers-standing-on-rocks-in-the-stream-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
