Dead Confederate Soldier, in Trench Beyond a Section of Chevaux-De-Frise (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

Petersburg, Va. Dead Confederate Soldier, in Trench Beyond a Section of Chevaux-De-Frise (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

This sticker reproduces a black-and-white photograph from the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, showing a fallen Confederate soldier lying in a dirt trench beyond a section of defensive obstacles.

Visual Elements & Composition

The image is built in greys, from pale highlights to near black, and it is a documentary view rather than a composed scene. The soldier lies in the trench at the centre of the frame. Timber palisade stakes and a log revetment along the trench wall frame him, and the chevaux-de-frise, the sharpened barricade of timber, stands in front of the position. The photograph is stark and unembellished, with no added detail beyond the terrain.

Meaning & Symbolism

Chevaux-de-frise were defensive obstacles used to slow infantry and cavalry, and the trench and revetment were the working parts of the siege lines around Petersburg in 1864 and 1865. The photograph is a record of the aftermath of that fighting. It was made for the documentation of the war, and it shows the physical cost of trench warfare in a form that has been studied by historians ever since.

On the Kiss-Cut Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of the photograph, so the edge of the cut becomes the edge of the print. The grey tones carry the scene onto the flat face of the sticker, and the cut keeps the photograph's frame as its own shape. It is best kept in a setting that suits a historical record, such as a study, a desk or a reference binder.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/petersburg-va-dead-confederate-soldier-in-trench-beyond-a-section-of-chevaux-de-frise-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-13162205154000958763-alt-3.webp?v=1787770570
https://thestickerspace.com/products/petersburg-va-dead-confederate-soldier-in-trench-beyond-a-section-of-chevaux-de-frise-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
