Nathaniel Michler, U.S. Engineers, at Bryant House (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

Petersburg, Va. Cottage of Col. Nathaniel Michler, U.S. Engineers, at Bryant House (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

A black-and-white view of a log cabin at the Bryant House in Petersburg, Virginia, the residence associated with Colonel Nathaniel Michler of the U.S. Engineers.

Visual Elements & Composition

The photograph is monochrome, built from mid grey, dark grey and light grey with black and off-white accents. A gabled log cabin with a shingled roof fills the centre of the frame, and a trellised porch with arched trim runs along its front. Two women stand at the doorway, one in a long dress holding a parasol, and a wooden side chair sits near the entrance. Dense woodland surrounds the building, so the cabin reads as a small clearing of order within the trees.

Meaning & Symbolism

The image records a nineteenth-century place and a figure tied to it. Michler served as an engineer with the U.S. Army during the Civil War, and his residence at the Bryant House in Petersburg stands for the military engineering presence in the region. The formal, documentary style of the glass-plate photograph, with its careful framing and posed figures, belongs to the photographic record of the 1860s.

Cut to the Cabin's Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline you choose, so the gabled roof and the porch can be cut close to the building and placed without a border. Set on a journal, notebook or laptop, the cabin and its trellis keep their clear structure, and the two figures at the door read well at sticker size.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/petersburg-va-cottage-of-col-nathaniel-michler-us-engineers-at-bryant-house-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-47092427228411510124-alt-3.webp?v=1787770534
https://thestickerspace.com/products/petersburg-va-cottage-of-col-nathaniel-michler-us-engineers-at-bryant-house-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
