Galloping horses and mounted riders fill the field: one archer draws a bow from the saddle, and another rider stands upright with both arms raised, while a grey horse runs through the middle of the composition. A robe of deep blue marks the figures who command the eye, and a gold tag and vertical label cartouches anchor the scroll's structure. The indigo silk border frames the whole with a geometric pattern, so the eye moves from the riders to the frame and back again.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Nardunbu was more than a sporting event. The Manchu court staged it as a public display of martial skill, a way of reinforcing Manchu identity and the emperor's authority. By holding these contests, the court kept its identity as horse-borne warriors alive even while governing from the sedentary capital. The acrobatic riding and the archery on horseback show the physical discipline expected of the Manchu nobility, and the painting, dating to the mid-seventeenth century, preserves that courtly life during the reign of the Shunzhi Emperor.

Cut to the Riders

Kiss-cut vinyl follows the outline of the artwork, so the riders and horses can stand on their own without a surrounding border of paper. The adhesive backing suits the smooth, flat surfaces this sticker is made for, such as laptops, journals and windows, where the figures of the competition can be seen up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/nardunbu-horsemanship-competition-for-the-shunzhi-emperor-dated-1662-v18-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787982220
https://thestickerspace.com/products/nardunbu-horsemanship-competition-for-the-shunzhi-emperor-dated-1662-v18-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
