Roshū employs a balanced, crowded layout where figures overlap to create a sense of collective motion, punctuated by traditional motifs like the treasure ship (takarabune) and various attributes of prosperity. The color palette relies on the muted but intentional earth tones and primary pigments common to woodblock originals, emphasizing flowing robes and the sharp, idiosyncratic facial expressions that define the artist’s unique stylistic hand.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Seven Gods of Good Fortune represent a syncretic blend of Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions, serving as patrons of longevity, wealth, wisdom, and success. By grouping figures like Ebisu, Daikokuten, and Benzaiten together, the 1837 work serves as an omnibus of auspicious icons meant to attract favor and ward off misfortune. Roshū’s specific iteration leans into the playful energy of the era, presenting these divine figures not as distant, stoic icons, but as animated characters engaged in a joyous, celestial procession.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut design, the irregular, undulating silhouette of this decal follows the exact contours of the deities, allowing the intricate, busy energy of the woodblock print to stand out against any flat surface. Because the vinyl is cut precisely to the shape of the artwork, the characters appear to leap directly from your journal or laptop, stripping away the visual clutter of a standard rectangular border. The die-cut edges mirror the hand-carved origins of the original 1837 print, turning a historical illustration into a modern, tactile graphic element.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/nagasawa-rosh-seven-gods-of-good-fortune-1837-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788633697
https://thestickerspace.com/products/nagasawa-rosh-seven-gods-of-good-fortune-1837-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
