A crowded flatboat with uniformed soldiers sits on the water at the centre, with masted vessels at the wharf and clapboard buildings and a brick chimney along the waterfront. Groups of onlookers stand on the shore, and the horizontal composition gives the river and the town equal weight.

Meaning & Symbolism

The raft was an improvised crossing, built from bundled blankets to carry men and supplies when bridges were destroyed or unavailable. Northern Virginia lay across the Potomac from the capital and was fought over throughout the American Civil War, so such crossings kept troops moving through a contested landscape. The photograph documents the field engineering and resourcefulness of the 1860s.

On the Die-Cut Sticker

The die-cut follows the outline of the crossing, so the soldiers and the raft keep their own shape rather than sitting in a rectangle. The matte finish keeps the sepia tones soft, and the detail of the boats and figures reads best on a clean, smooth surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/military-construction-in-northern-virginia-raft-of-blanket-boats-ferrying-soldiers-across-the-potomac-river-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-65032044769731895034-front.webp?v=1790485171
https://thestickerspace.com/products/military-construction-in-northern-virginia-raft-of-blanket-boats-ferrying-soldiers-across-the-potomac-river-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
