Their closeness carries the scene, and the figures are arranged so the eye moves from the king's supporting arms to Leonardo's face. The mood is solemn and restrained, with the emotional weight placed on the gesture of support rather than on any display. As a work of late eighteenth-century history painting, it follows the classical rules of arrangement and clarity.

Meaning & Symbolism

Leonardo died in 1519 at Clos Lucé near Amboise, where Francis I had given him a residence, and the scene dramatises the tradition that the king held him in his final hours. The painting honours the relationship between a visionary artist and royal patronage, and it presents Leonardo as a figure whose legacy outlasted his life. Menageot was a French painter of the eighteenth century, and this work belongs to the period's taste for dignified scenes of great men.

A Sticker Cut to the Figures

A die-cut sticker is shaped to the outline of the artwork, so the contours of the two figures set the edge of the piece rather than a square around them. The silhouette keeps the scene's focus on the pair at its centre, a quiet moment of support carried onto any surface it is placed on.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/menageot-francois-guillaume-the-death-of-leonardo-da-vinci-in-the-arms-of-francis-i-artwork-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-20117578032497271843-front.webp?v=1789647480
https://thestickerspace.com/products/menageot-francois-guillaume-the-death-of-leonardo-da-vinci-in-the-arms-of-francis-i-artwork-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
