Deep, forest-green foliage grounds the image, providing a structural contrast to the delicate, paper-thin petals. A column of precise, black Chinese ink characters runs vertically alongside the flora, balancing the visual weight of the blooms and creating a rhythmic interplay between the illustrative botanical subject and the calligraphic art form.

Meaning & Symbolism

Peonies, often called the king of flowers in East Asian art, serve as symbols of prosperity, honor, and fleeting beauty. Originating from the 1830s, this piece reflects the period's fascination with naturalism and the literati tradition, where painting and poetry were considered complementary expressions of a single aesthetic vision. Keibun’s inclusion of the poem elevates the botanical sketch into a meditative reflection on the season, grounding the transient nature of the blooming peony within the permanent structure of written language.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because this sticker is cut to the precise outline of the botanical form, the sprawling petals and leaves escape the constraint of a rectangular frame. This allows the intricate brushwork and the stark, elegant lines of the calligraphy to integrate directly onto your chosen flat surface. The contour-cut layout highlights the negative space originally intended by the artist, making the artwork appear as though it has been lifted directly from the pages of a 19th-century sketchbook and placed onto your journal or laptop cover.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/matsumura-keibun-tree-peonies-and-chinese-poem-on-peonies-ca-1830s-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-front.webp?v=1788662005
https://thestickerspace.com/products/matsumura-keibun-tree-peonies-and-chinese-poem-on-peonies-ca-1830s-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
