Soft grey ink washes dominate, set against a cream ground that gives the work its airy openness. Gold ochre pampas grass stalks rise through the lower registers, and a pale moon hangs over the water. A calligraphic poem written on paper sits within the scene, and a vermilion seal stamp anchors the composition with a single warm accent.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, centred on the meeting of these two rivers in Hunan province, come from an 11th-century Chinese poetic tradition. Across that tradition the views carry associations of exile, longing and the ethereal beauty of nature, and they served literati painters as a shared template for expressing those feelings. Ōkyo, a leading figure of the Maruyama-Shijō school in the Edo period, approached this canonical theme with his characteristic observational precision. The result is a late-period work that joins classical reverence to his own naturalist vocabulary.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own image, so the artwork's edges become the edges of the object. Each panel of the screen works as a separate window, and a sticker lets one of those windows stand alone on a surface, held close and seen up near eye level.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/maruyama-kyo-eight-views-of-xiao-and-xiang-rivers-late-18th-century-v12-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787978108
https://thestickerspace.com/products/maruyama-kyo-eight-views-of-xiao-and-xiang-rivers-late-18th-century-v12-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
