The pale ruff is the brightest area of the picture, and the dark garments set it off. The painting is built around the sitter's face and clothing, and the carefully rendered textures of the fabric give the figure its weight and presence.

Meaning & Symbolism

Maes was a Dutch Golden Age painter who trained in Dordrecht and Amsterdam and had been a pupil of Rembrandt. Portraits of this kind were commissioned by wealthy families to record lineage, prestige and personal character, and the ruff and dark dress signal dignity and social standing. Margaretha de Geer was the wife of the merchant Jacob Trip, and the portrait is considered a companion piece to his portrait, in line with Maes's practice of painting pairs of spouses. The work is held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.

On the Die-Cut Sticker

A die-cut sticker is cut around the outline of its artwork, so the figure takes her own shape rather than a square frame. The white ruff stands out clearly against a laptop lid, a journal cover or a smooth glass surface. The sticker brings the dignity of a seventeenth-century Dutch portrait into an everyday space.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/maes-nicolaes-portrait-of-margaretha-de-geer-wife-of-jacob-trip-artwork-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-24593614724856339802-front.webp?v=1789693892
https://thestickerspace.com/products/maes-nicolaes-portrait-of-margaretha-de-geer-wife-of-jacob-trip-artwork-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
