Black ink dominates, its cursive strokes carrying the rhythm of the page. Warm off-white paper gives the ground, framed by a pale blue-grey edge and a dark surround. A signature block sits at the lower left, marked with red seals, and that vermilion accent is the only warm colour in the design, drawing the eye to the artist's mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove were third-century Chinese scholars, writers and musicians of the Wei and Jin dynasties. They withdrew from corrupt political life to gather in a bamboo grove, where they debated philosophy, played music, wrote poetry and drank heavily. Their retreat became one of the most enduring motifs in Chinese art and literature, standing for intellectual freedom, personal integrity and disdain for worldly power. It reflects the Daoist-leaning ideal of stepping away from court intrigue in pursuit of spiritual and artistic truth. Liu painted this subject in 1844 during the Qing dynasty, placing his handscroll within the literati tradition of scholar-painters who reworked classical themes through their own technical mastery.

Made for the Cut Edge

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the handscroll's long horizontal format becomes a shape defined by the artwork itself. Its ink-and-paper character is best seen up close, on a surface you pass often, such as a notebook cover, laptop lid or journal page. Each sticker carries the scroll's calligraphy and seals as a single cut piece, ready to join a personal collection of scholarly and literati imagery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/liu-yanchong-seven-sages-of-the-bamboo-grove-1844-v8-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787974115
https://thestickerspace.com/products/liu-yanchong-seven-sages-of-the-bamboo-grove-1844-v8-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
