The palette relies on the subtle modulation of ink tones, where the dense, textured plumage of the ducks contrasts against the delicate, calligraphic precision of the floral petals. The scene occupies a vertical orientation, utilizing negative space to emphasize the stillness of the water and the gentle weight of the heavy blossoms hanging over the pair.

Meaning & Symbolism

In the tradition of Chinese court painting, the Mandarin duck is an enduring symbol of marital fidelity and lifelong companionship, as these birds were believed to pair for life. Their presence alongside the cotton rose hibiscus—a plant often associated with longevity and autumnal grace—transforms the image into a sophisticated visual blessing. Lü Ji’s execution captures not just the biological accuracy of the subjects, but the atmospheric quietude prized by the literati of the era, reflecting the intersection of imperial aesthetics and naturalistic observation.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because the sticker is cut precisely to the outline of this complex scene, the branches and water edges become an active part of the shape rather than a constrained rectangle. This silhouette allows the intricate, flowing lines of the 15th-century brushwork to integrate directly onto flat surfaces like journal covers or laptop lids, where the artwork sits as a standalone piece of classical history peeled directly from its backing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/l-ji-mandarin-ducks-and-cotton-rose-hibiscus-late-15th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-front.webp?v=1788701667
https://thestickerspace.com/products/l-ji-mandarin-ducks-and-cotton-rose-hibiscus-late-15th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
