A pink flowering shrub and chrysanthemums fill the upper and middle registers, while a pair of mandarin ducks, one with a teal head, rests near a dark rock brown garden stone at the base. Two dark birds perch on a flowering branch, balancing the composition. The palette is restrained: ochre silk ground, leaf green foliage, blush pink blossoms, and the teal of the duck carrying the eye across the scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

In East Asian iconography, mandarin ducks represent lifelong fidelity and marital devotion, a meaning rooted in their paired habits. Set beside the cotton rose hibiscus, a flower associated with endurance and autumnal beauty, the painting joins conjugal harmony to the appreciation of seasonal change and auspicious wishes. Lü Ji was a prominent court painter of the Ming dynasty, known for bird-and-flower work with precise naturalistic detail and expressive brushwork. This scroll is a notable example of his lasting influence on the flower-and-bird genre.

Gift Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker is shaped to the outline of its artwork, so the ducks, branch and blossoms stand on their own rather than sitting inside a frame. The design reads as a single cut image, which suits a collector's laptop, journal or notebook, where a small scene of paired birds and flowers can be looked at up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/l-ji-mandarin-ducks-and-cotton-rose-hibiscus-late-15th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787975137
https://thestickerspace.com/products/l-ji-mandarin-ducks-and-cotton-rose-hibiscus-late-15th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
