Traditional pigments define the subtle color palette, emphasizing the intricate patterns of the courtesans' robes. The composition avoids clutter, focusing instead on the interplay between the musician and her companion, whose attention is fixed upon the letter in her hands. The negative space typical of woodblock printing frames the subjects, drawing the eye to the refined posture and the detailed rendering of the traditional Japanese harp.

Meaning & Symbolism

Originating from the world of Ukiyo-e, this piece serves as a window into the leisure and aesthetic values of the Edo era. The courtesan, a central figure in Japanese art history, is elevated here beyond a mere subject to a practitioner of high culture. The koto symbolizes musical sophistication and the pursuit of artistic discipline, while the letter represents the clandestine or intellectual nature of private communication. Together, these elements reflect the refined lifestyle of the urban elite, capturing a fleeting instance of tranquility that bridges the gap between domestic intimacy and formal artistic performance.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut follows the precise, sweeping outlines of the figures and their instruments, transforming this historical print into a portable silhouette. Because the cut contours to the exact shape of the courtesans, the design functions as a standalone icon when applied to flat surfaces like laptops or journals. The composition loses the rigid boundaries of its original woodblock frame, allowing the graceful curves of the Edo-era subjects to stand out against your chosen background.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kubo-shunman-two-courtesans-one-playing-a-koto-harp-and-the-other-reading-a-letter-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KBSHN-2X2-223-front.webp?v=1789229381
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kubo-shunman-two-courtesans-one-playing-a-koto-harp-and-the-other-reading-a-letter-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
