The woman, in a patterned kimono, anchors the centre, and the large woven basket sits at her side as the most solid shape in the image. One child holds a shell overhead, while a second child sits unclothed nearby. Shells are scattered across the lower area, linking the figures to the shoreline. The palette is restrained: cream ground, olive brown and muted red for the figures, pale green, and ochre yellow accents. Japanese text, 土佐日記, appears in the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The work belongs to the tradition of Japanese woodblock printing, where everyday labour and domestic life were subjects in their own right. The fisherwoman and her basket stand for work and provisioning, and the children tie the scene to family and community. The shells and shoreline place the moment in a maritime world. The inscribed title, 土佐日記 (Tosa Diary), refers to the classical Japanese travel diary, so the print reads as a scene drawn from literature as well as from daily life.

Where This Sticker Lives

Kiss-cut means the vinyl is cut to the outline of the artwork, so the woman, basket and children sit on the surface without a square border. The design suits flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where its silhouette can stand on its own. Its small scale rewards a closer look, which fits a print made to be studied up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kubo-shunman-fisherwoman-with-a-basket-and-two-boys-19th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KBSHN-2X2-110-alt-3.webp?v=1785681137
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kubo-shunman-fisherwoman-with-a-basket-and-two-boys-19th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
