Below it, a masked dancer in vermilion and gold robes commands the centre, while the flute player sits calmly to one side. A kneeling attendant in a floral kimono and a folding fan add layers at the lower edge, and a sword rests on the veranda boards. The palette is restrained: warm cream ground, vermilion red, tan brown, pale teal and olive grey, with the red and gold of the dancer as the only strong accent.

Meaning & Symbolism

Bugaku is the ancient court dance and music tradition of Japan, performed at the imperial court and at ceremonial occasions. The flute, the masked dancer and the courtier's measured posture all express that formal order, where every role is fixed and every movement has a purpose. The moon and clouds lift the scene into stillness, while the sword and fan mark the rank of the people present. Kubo Shunman's work dates to approximately 1810, a period when such court arts were recorded in the popular prints of the Edo era.

On the Kiss-Cut Stickers

A kiss-cut sticker is cut along the edge of its own design, so the outline of the moon, the dancer's robes and the veranda becomes the shape of the object itself. Where a framed print asks to be seen from across a room, this artwork rewards a closer look, with the flute, the fan and the kneeling attendant resolving as the eye moves across the surface. Placed on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a notebook, it carries a piece of court history into everyday use.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kubo-shunman-courtier-playing-a-flute-to-accompany-a-bugaku-dance-probably-1810-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KBSHN-2X2-88-alt-3.webp?v=1785681642
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kubo-shunman-courtier-playing-a-flute-to-accompany-a-bugaku-dance-probably-1810-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
