Distant mountains rise across the upper field, and a rounded hill sits low in the frame. A pine tree and a bare tree branch frame the view, while two travellers walk a grassy path: a standing figure in a pale robe holds a staff, and a figure in a green robe wears a tall black hat. The spatial arrangement is balanced, moving the eye from the foreground figures out toward the far mountains.

Meaning & Symbolism

The work centres on contemplation. Rather than showing action, it shows the act of looking, with the courtier and attendant standing as observers of nature. The pairing also carries the social order of the period, a figure of rank and a younger companion sharing a single view. Made in 1796 during the Edo period, the print reflects the precise linework and balanced composition of Shunman's era and offers a window into how landscape was appreciated in historical Japan.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork's edges become the shape of the object. Here the tall black hat, the rounded hill and the sweep of the mountains define the silhouette, turning the print into a piece you place on a surface rather than frame on a wall. The figures look out across the land, and the sticker invites the same close, deliberate looking, one scene held in view on a surface you pass every day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kubo-shunman-courtier-and-young-attendant-gazing-at-a-landscape-1796-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KBSHN-2X2-86-alt-3.webp?v=1785681671
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kubo-shunman-courtier-and-young-attendant-gazing-at-a-landscape-1796-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
