Those bursts radiate across the upper field while silhouetted spectators line the lower edge, their heads forming a dark foreground that frames the spectacle. A row of dotted lanterns runs through the landscape. In the margin, a vertical cartouche carries the inscription 御届 and the date 明治十四年, with the publisher's name 福田熊 and the artist's signature 小林清親 set beside it.

Meaning & Symbolism

Fireworks over Ikenohata belong to the summer celebrations of Edo and early Meiji Tokyo, when crowds gathered on the water and the hills to watch the night sky. Kiyochika used that moment to study light against darkness, a subject that drew on Western ideas of atmosphere while staying rooted in Japanese print tradition. The cartouche records the print's official registration in Meiji 14, which places the image firmly within the transformation of Japanese art during the period.

Built for the Shape of the Burst

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the fireworks, lanterns and spectator silhouettes can keep their edges rather than sitting inside a square border. Because this design is built on contrast between dark ground and luminous highlights, the cut lets the brightest streaks stand clear against whatever surface they are placed on.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kobayashi-kiyochika-fireworks-at-ikenohata-1881-meiji-14-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KBYKYC-2X2-6-alt-3.webp?v=1785684318
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kobayashi-kiyochika-fireworks-at-ikenohata-1881-meiji-14-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
