Warm tan paper forms the ground, and the figures sit in dusty rose, sage green and pale cream, with near black defining the linework. A woman in a floral kimono leans on the railing, and her posture anchors the lower half of the frame. Above her, a cherry branch in bloom breaks the vertical line and softens the upper edge. Behind them, a shoji screen holds a faint figure, so the composition layers a foreground presence with a half-seen one inside the room. Utamaro's delicate line work carries the folds of the fabric and the faces, which stay quiet and composed.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene draws on the Tale of Genji, the eleventh-century court romance that Edo-period artists returned to again and again. The Lady of Rokujo and Princess Aoi are both characters from that story, and the moment Utamaro chose is one of restrained tension rather than action. The blossoming branch signals the season and the fleeting beauty that ukiyo-e prints celebrated, while the screen and railing mark the enclosed, refined world of the aristocratic household. The work stands as a document of early nineteenth-century woodblock printing and of how Edo artists translated classical literature into contemporary visual language.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork becomes a single object rather than a sheet to be trimmed. This print suits that treatment: its vertical rectangle reads as one clean silhouette, and the cherry branch and railing give the eye a clear edge to follow. Placed on its own, the piece holds the same quiet balance it has on the original page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kitagawa-utamaro-the-lady-of-rokujo-being-visited-by-the-princess-aoi-ca-1805-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTGTMR-2X2-226-alt-3.webp?v=1785687059
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kitagawa-utamaro-the-lady-of-rokujo-being-visited-by-the-princess-aoi-ca-1805-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
