The design reads as a double-page book spread divided into rectangular panels, so the eye moves across the page the way a reader would. A wasp hovers in flight in one panel, while a paper wasp nest and a caterpillar climbing a flowering bean vine occupy the others. Two characters, 蜂 and 毛虫, label the subjects in the artist's own hand.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print comes from the Picture Book of Crawling, a work devoted to small creatures that move across leaves, stems and ground. Utamaro treats the wasp and the caterpillar as equals, giving each the same precision of line and the same care in placement. The wasp stands for the nest-builder's craft, and the caterpillar for the slow, patient life of things that crawl. Together they reflect the Edo period's interest in observing the natural world closely and recording it without ornament, a habit that defines late eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking.

Reading the Print on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its artwork, so the wasp, the nest and the caterpillar stand on their own once applied, the way the panels once stood on the page. It suits smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the design can be seen up close and read at a glance, much as the original prints were handled and studied.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kitagawa-utamaro-paper-wasp-hachi-hairy-caterpillar-kemushi-from-the-picture-book-of-crawling-1788-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTGTMR-2X2-164-alt-3.webp?v=1785687986
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kitagawa-utamaro-paper-wasp-hachi-hairy-caterpillar-kemushi-from-the-picture-book-of-crawling-1788-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
