Women sit in the boat, one holding a fan, while a standing boatman works a long pole. Below them, unclothed children splash through rolling waves, and their bodies form the liveliest passage in the print. The palette is restrained: pale beige ground, dusty rose, sage green, ochre and charcoal black, with the black used for the boat's lines and the figures' contours.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print belongs to the ukiyo, or "floating world," tradition of the Edo period, which turned ordinary pleasures into subjects for art. A summer outing on the water stands for seasonal leisure, and the children's play stands for the uninhibited joy of everyday life. Utamaro, one of the most celebrated printmakers of that era, pairs the human activity with the water that carries it, so the scene reads as a fleeting moment of communal pleasure rather than a formal event.

Why This Works as a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of its own artwork, so the horizontal scene of boat, boatman and swimmers becomes a single shape placed directly on the surface it decorates. Its small footprint suits a surface seen up close, such as a notebook, a laptop lid or a phone case, where the figures and wave pattern can be read at arm's length. Each sticker carries a full piece of Edo-period daily life into a modern object.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kitagawa-utamaro-boating-party-with-children-swimming-late-18th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTGTMR-2X2-42-alt-3.webp?v=1785690067
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kitagawa-utamaro-boating-party-with-children-swimming-late-18th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
