A large parasol anchors the left side, shading women who sit beneath cherry trees, while a fan-holding woman at top centre draws the eye upward. A bearded man sits among the women, and at the lower edge a woman in a dark patterned kimono kneels in front, her figure giving the composition its weight. Trays and seated guests form a banquet line, and a child moves through the procession at the edge. The palette is restrained: warm tan, pale cream, sage green, dusty rose and charcoal, with the rose and charcoal carrying the figures against the lighter ground.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Taiko is the honorific given to the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the title records a famous pleasure outing in which he presented his women to the public. Utamaro turns that history into a narrative of manners, showing rank, courtesy and refinement through posture, gesture and the placement of each figure. The cherry trees mark the spring season central to Edo-period viewing parties, while the parasol and fan signal the elegance of the court-inspired world the print depicts. Produced in 1804, at the height of Utamaro's career, the work stands as a classic example of ukiyo-e storytelling.

Cut to the Shape of the Scene

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the parasol, the banquet and the kneeling figure can be cut close to their edges and set apart from the backing. Once placed, the piece sits as a single object, the triptych's three panels reading as one image on the surface it is applied to. That is the right form for a print built on a sequence of figures: the cut carries the composition, not just a frame around it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kitagawa-utamaro-a-view-of-the-pleasures-of-the-taiko-and-his-five-wives-at-rakut-1804-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTGTMR-2X2-16-alt-3.webp?v=1785690431
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kitagawa-utamaro-a-view-of-the-pleasures-of-the-taiko-and-his-five-wives-at-rakut-1804-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
