The child in a checked kimono sits low at the centre of the panel, the one point of close activity in an otherwise open scene. A woman carries a child on her back, a young woman holds a red paper lantern, and another woman sits on a bench fanning herself. Weeping willow branches hang across the upper edge, and a red lantern rises on a pole. The round fan format adds a second shape that frames the figures, so the composition reads as a sequence of rounded forms around one small, bright gesture.

Meaning & Symbolism

Utamaro published this image in 1801 in Flowers of the Four Seasons, a book of ukiyo-e prints that moves through the year month by month. Fireworks and lanterns mark the summer festival season, when Edo residents gathered at the river and the streets after dark. The child's play stands for the everyday pleasures of childhood within that celebration, and the willow and the fan place the moment firmly in the heat of the season. Utamaro was among the most celebrated masters of the ukiyo-e tradition, and this print shows his skill at turning a fleeting seasonal moment into a lasting image.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the round fan and the rectangular panel of this print can be separated from the sheet as they appear in the artwork. The small figure of the child, the lantern and the willow sit at a scale that suits a sticker held close, where the detail of the checked kimono and the lantern's red can be seen up close. The design rewards a second look, which is how a print of this size is meant to be read.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kitagawa-utamaro-a-child-lighting-fireworks-from-the-illustrated-book-flowers-of-the-four-seasons-1801-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTGTMR-2X2-2-alt-3.webp?v=1785690917
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kitagawa-utamaro-a-child-lighting-fireworks-from-the-illustrated-book-flowers-of-the-four-seasons-1801-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
