A snarling adult tiger with bared teeth anchors the scene, set against a rocky stream bed and misty hills rendered in ink grey and dark ink black. The composition is built from folding screen panels, each framed by a pale sage brocade border that divides the scene into structured rectangles.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Japanese art the tiger stands for strength, courage and protection. Adding a tigress and cub shifts the image toward familial devotion, nurturing care and continuity, so the powerful adult and the tender young sit within the same frame. Tigers never lived wild in Japan, so artists worked from imported skins, Chinese paintings and imported lore, which gave these images both exotic wonder and philosophical weight. Chikudō, a celebrated painter of animals, made this work in the Meiji period, when he adapted traditional technique to a changing era. It stands as a significant example of late nineteenth-century Japanese painting.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to its own outline, so the tigers themselves define the edge of the object. Each sticker carries one panel of the screen's composition in miniature, letting the cub, tigress and snarling adult be placed on a laptop, journal or notebook and read at arm's length, where the detail of the rocks and misty hills comes through.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kishi-chikud-tiger-tigress-and-cub-1892-v6-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787970455
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kishi-chikud-tiger-tigress-and-cub-1892-v6-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
