Two figures in layered robes stand on a veranda, and a third figure holds a fan beside a railing. Chrysanthemum blossoms climb a lattice fence, and a garden rock with flowering plants anchors the lower corner. The palette is restrained: cream paper, coral red, sage green, pale yellow, and dark brown-black linework. The inscription 九月 ("ninth month") names the season, and the artist's signature 春朗 (Shunrō) marks one of Hokusai's early names.

Meaning & Symbolism

The chrysanthemum is the subject's key. The Kikujido figure, drawn from Noh and Kabuki legend, is a youth who drinks dew from chrysanthemum petals and gains long life, and the ninth month is the season of the chrysanthemum festival. Hokusai's print turns that legend into a stage scene, placing the dancers in an elegant domestic setting where theater and flowers share the same visual language. The work comes from the late eighteenth century, when woodblock prints brought Kabuki stars and dramatic moments to a wide urban audience in Edo.

Why This Works on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the vertical cartouche of this print becomes the sticker's silhouette, and the fence, figures and flowers stay intact inside it. Because the design is built on strong vertical lines and a single framing edge, it reads cleanly at small scale on a notebook, a laptop lid or a sketchbook cover, where the linework and the chrysanthemums can be seen up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-the-ninth-month-kabuki-dance-kikujido-ca-1796-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSHKS-2X2-22-alt-3.webp?v=1785827571
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-the-ninth-month-kabuki-dance-kikujido-ca-1796-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
