Bare trees rise in vertical trunks, and their branches hold heavy white drifts against a slate-blue sky. Figures crouch in the cold, and a traveller in a hooded cloak leans on a staff. Diagonal bands of smoke-like flame rise from a bonfire where travellers warm themselves, giving the composition its sharpest movement. Charcoal anchors the darkest passages, while rose pink and teal appear in small accents. A rectangular cartouche carries the characters 百人一首, the title of the classical hundred-poem anthology the series draws from.

Meaning & Symbolism

The series pairs each classical Japanese poem with a scene that carries its feeling, and this print turns Muneyuki's verse into a winter image of shelter and endurance. The bonfire marks warmth found in harsh conditions, while the bare trees and crouching figures set the poem's cold, quiet atmosphere. Hokusai, the most celebrated ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, approached the series with a documented method of visual storytelling, so the image reads as a faithful record of mid-nineteenth-century Japanese aesthetics rather than a loose interpretation of the text.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the snow, smoke and cartouche stand alone as a single shape. Because the image is built from strong diagonals and a few dark masses, it holds its structure at the small size a sticker occupies. Set it on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a smooth window pane, where the print's stillness can be seen up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-poem-by-minamoto-no-muneyuki-ason-from-the-series-one-hundred-poems-explained-by-the-ca-1835-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSHKS-2X2-314-alt-3.webp?v=1785696400
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-poem-by-minamoto-no-muneyuki-ason-from-the-series-one-hundred-poems-explained-by-the-ca-1835-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
