A billowing column of cream smoke rises from a thatched house and drifts across the upper field. Diagonal rope lines run from the water toward the edge of the frame, where men in straw rain capes haul together. Crouching figures sit at the water's edge, and bundled firewood stacks on the bank. A rectangular cartouche holds the poem and carries the characters 百人一首, "One Hundred Poems."

Meaning & Symbolism

The series One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse pairs each classical waka with a scene drawn from ordinary life. Here the poem is by Kakinomoto Hitomaro, one of the most revered poets of the early anthology tradition, and Hokusai answers his verse with labour, weather and hearth. The smoke and firewood speak of home and warmth, while the ropes and streaming water show work carried out against the current. The print comes from the Edo period, when ukiyo-e woodblocks brought classical literature to a wide urban public, and it stands as a 19th-century example of master printmaking rooted in Japanese cultural heritage.

Reading the Scene on a Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the cloud of smoke, the rope lines and the cartouche read as one shape on whatever surface they join. Hokusai's composition rewards a close view: the figures and characters are best seen at arm's length, on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window pane. Indoor decor is the placement this sticker is made for, and the smooth flat surfaces it suits let the panel be read one scene at a time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-poem-by-kakinomoto-hitomaro-from-the-series-one-hundred-poems-explained-by-the-nurse-1839-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSHKS-2X2-306-alt-3.webp?v=1785696787
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-poem-by-kakinomoto-hitomaro-from-the-series-one-hundred-poems-explained-by-the-nurse-1839-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
