Angular folds dominate the composition, with vertical panel edges framing the scene. A partial view of a robe or garment hem anchors the lower part of the image, and the artist's signature and seal sit within the frame as marks of authorship.

Meaning & Symbolism

Guan Yu lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period. He is revered as a paragon of loyalty, righteousness and martial prowess, and he rose to the status of a deity in both folk religion and state cults as the Chinese God of War. His story, popularised by the epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, casts him as an unwavering protector and a symbol of justice. Hokusai's depiction draws on this figure's Confucian integrity and military honour, reflecting how Chinese historical subjects shaped Japanese art during the Edo period.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork's contours define the object itself. The folds of the robe and the seal can stand alone on a surface, letting the grey tones of this fragment read as a complete, deliberate shape rather than a rectangle. Each sticker carries a single fragment of Hokusai's mastery, ready to place where a collector will see it up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-guan-yu-chinese-god-of-war-19th-century-v4-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787967520
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-guan-yu-chinese-god-of-war-19th-century-v4-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
