The pine dominates the foreground, its branches spread into a dense, rounded canopy that gives the scene its name. A horizontal rectangle of landscape anchors the lower half, while the conical peak of Fuji rises in the distance and sets the vertical counterpoint. Small figures rest on a hillside path, and a stone lantern and a thatched-roof building sit among the trees. There is no text in the composition beyond the artist's signature and the series title.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Cushion Pine at Aoyama was a real tree on the road near Edo, and Hokusai painted it as a point of rest for travellers, the pine's sheltering canopy echoing the pause the figures take on the path. Fuji, the centre of the series, stands as the constant that gives each viewpoint its meaning. Created around 1830–32 as part of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, the print shows the mature ukiyo-e tradition at its most serene, where nature, travel and the sacred mountain are held in one frame.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the pine's canopy and the curve of the peak become the edge of the object itself. The design works at the scale of a hand, the way a woodblock print was meant to be seen up close, and the cut lets the tree stand clear of whatever surface it joins. Collectors of Edo-period prints will recognise the source, and anyone who knows the series will read Fuji in the corner of the composition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-cushion-pine-at-aoyama-aoyama-enza-no-matsu-from-the-series-thirty-six-views-of-mount-ca-183032-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSHKS-2X2-154-alt-3.webp?v=1785703521
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-cushion-pine-at-aoyama-aoyama-enza-no-matsu-from-the-series-thirty-six-views-of-mount-ca-183032-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
