The composition is built around a vertical panel, with a fan-shaped bundle opening across it. The blossom is the only warm accent, so the eye lands on it first and then follows the stems down into the tied grass. The loose, unfinished quality of the strokes reads as ink brush painting, the way a studio sketchbook holds practice work rather than a finished print.

Meaning & Symbolism

The album holds ninety-seven sketches made by Katsushika Hokusai alongside his disciples in nineteenth-century Edo-period Japan. Each leaf documents a studio exercise, showing how motifs such as flowers, stems and bundled plant forms were observed, copied and refined within a professional ukiyo-e workshop. Hokusai is one of the most significant figures in Japanese art history, and this work is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a record of how he taught the apprenticeship system to pass on form and observation.

Crafted for the Sticker Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of the artwork itself, so the blossom, stems and bundle keep their own shape when they leave the page. Placed on a laptop, journal or notebook, the leaf becomes a small piece of studio practice carried into everyday use, and it rewards a close look from the collector who knows whose hand made the strokes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v77-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787966682
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v77-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
