The sketches move from figures and scenes of daily life to studies of animals and plants, so the page reads as a set of quick, separate observations rather than one composed picture. Ink lines and touches of colour carry each drawing.

Meaning & Symbolism

Katsushika Hokusai was one of the most prolific and influential painters of Edo-period Japan, and the album belongs to the studio that trained around him. Its subjects include folklore and the natural world, and the drawings served as reference material, helping pupils absorb the master's way of seeing. The album is a record of how a school passed its technique from teacher to student in the nineteenth century.

Where the Sketch Meets the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so a single study can be followed to its edge with no page border around it. Placed on a laptop, a journal or a window, the sketch reads as a compact piece of studio practice, and the ink lines are clearest up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v73-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787966620
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v73-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
