A horizontal rectangular leaf frames the scene, and a gold brocade border sets the edge of the page. Two roosters face each other across the centre, their tail feathers sweeping out in long, rhythmic arcs that fill the space and pull the eye across the leaf. The composition is built on that tension between the birds and the open paper around them.

Meaning & Symbolism

Sketch albums like this one were working tools in a master's studio, holding compositional studies and technical exercises that passed from Hokusai to his students. Fighting cocks were a recurring subject in Japanese painting, valued for their dynamic poses and the energy of their movement, which made them a favourite test of a draughtsman's observation. The leaf records that shared practice: Hokusai's relentless study of the natural world, set beside the interpretations of the artists who trained at his side during the Edo period.

Why It Belongs on This Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the rooster confrontation can stand alone on a surface without the rest of the page around it. The sweeping feathers and the bold ink contours translate cleanly into a single cut shape, letting the sketch be placed as a standalone piece of studio ephemera on a favourite object or surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v48-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787966202
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v48-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
