Sumi-black line dominates, with figures drawn in a light wash of muted kimono colour. A crowd of kneeling and standing people fills the lower field, while an armoured warrior stands at top centre and a woman in kimono sits at upper left. A figure holding a long staff cuts diagonally through the group. A small vermilion seal adds the single note of strong red.

Meaning & Symbolism

Albums like this one were made in the Edo period as both teaching tools for students and stores of visual ideas for the master's larger output. Their subjects, from figures and animals to landscapes and supernatural beings, record the everyday life, folklore and street culture of the time. Hokusai, one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e artists, shaped generations of painters through his command of line and composition, and his work went on to influence European and American art. The sketches here show that teaching and observation sat at the centre of his practice.

Where the Sketch Lands

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so each figure and the warrior's silhouette carry their own edges onto whatever surface they meet. The sketch stays unframed and loose, as the album leaves were, and the seal at its margin marks it as a studio page. Placed on a laptop, journal or notebook, it brings a slice of Hokusai's working sketchbook into daily view.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v42-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787966108
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v42-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
