Sumi-black ink lines do the work here, set against a grey-gold border and scattered gold speckle that catches the light across the surface. Warriors dominate the composition: a samurai in lamellar armour is shown in profile, a second samurai holds a drawn sword, and a warrior with topknot-style hair completes the group. The line is quick and economical, leaving much of the parchment open so the figures read through movement rather than detail.

Meaning & Symbolism

Albums like this one were working references in traditional Japanese print and painting schools, collecting studies of figures, creatures and scenes that masters and students could draw from. Hokusai and his followers kept the spontaneous energy of direct observation alive in these pages, valuing the essential spirit and motion of a subject over academic rigidity. The warriors here belong to that tradition of legendary figures, and their presence shows how the studio drew on heroic subjects alongside everyday life. Hokusai himself stands among the towering figures of Japanese art, known for his innovations in ukiyo-e.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the bordered panel and the armoured figures sit on the surface as a single shape. Its small scale suits a close, repeated look, the kind of detail a viewer takes in up close and returns to again. Used on a notebook, laptop or journal, the sketch becomes a fragment of the album carried into daily use.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v39-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787966045
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v39-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
