Its ink line reads as woodblock-style, with economical contours that describe bodies through weight and tension rather than shading. A tall vertical panel and a horizontal fold crease divide the page, and the wrestlers' interlocked forms sit at its centre, so the eye moves from the grapple to the rear view of the wrestler at the edge.

Meaning & Symbolism

Sumo and wrestling were recurring subjects of Edo-period artists, valued for the strength and balance of the human body in motion. This is a leaf from an album attributed to Katsushika Hokusai and his disciples, a 19th-century collection of studies and preparatory drawings. Such albums served as instructional manuals inside the studio, transmitting observational habits and stylistic conventions from master to student, and they also held material that could be adapted for finished prints and paintings. Hokusai remains one of the most celebrated figures in Japanese art, and this page shows his workshop method of capturing the human world in quick, deliberate lines.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the wrestlers' silhouette becomes the object's shape rather than sitting inside a rectangle. Each sticker carries the sketch as a standalone drawing, the way a single leaf was lifted from its album. Because the design depends on its contours, the cut follows the figures closely, keeping the grapple intact at every edge.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v26-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787965855
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsushika-hokusai-album-of-sketches-by-katsushika-hokusai-and-his-disciples-19th-century-v26-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
