The spinning woman sits on the veranda in the middle distance, and the cloth-pounding figure anchors the lower foreground, so the eye moves from the rock up toward the house and the open land beyond. A pine tree, rice paddies and distant hills fill the background. The palette is restrained: pale grey-beige and grey-green carry most of the scene, with ochre yellow, salmon pink and brown picked out in the clothing and architecture. A small inscription, 春章圖, sits within the print as the artist's signature mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

Spinning and beating cloth were among the most essential domestic tasks of the period, and Shunshō presents them as steady, unhurried work rather than hardship. The pairing of the two activities shows the full sequence of textile preparation, from thread to finished fabric, and the figure with a fan and the pine tree add a note of calm to the labour. Katsukawa Shunshō was a leading ukiyo-e master of the 1770s, the founder of the Katsukawa school, and the teacher of Katsushika Hokusai. This print belongs to that moment, when woodblock printing turned everyday life into a subject worthy of fine line and careful composition.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the design's silhouette becomes the object's shape. The vertical composition of this scene, with its rock and veranda rising through the frame, translates directly into that cut line, and the artwork is seen up close, the way a collector would hold a print. Placed on a notebook, a sketchbook or a personal object, it brings a piece of Edo-period craft into daily view.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-woman-on-veranda-spinning-another-pounding-cloth-on-rock-in-foreground-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-860-alt-3.webp?v=1785706857
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-woman-on-veranda-spinning-another-pounding-cloth-on-rock-in-foreground-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
