Her black kimono sets off a pale under-robe at the collar and sleeves, so the eye settles on her stance and the cut of her clothing. The surrounding field is an old gold ground, framed by a striped brocade mount in blue-violet. A small vermilion artist's seal sits within the panel, the only warm accent against the dark garment. The layout is narrow and upright, with the figure placed close to the viewer.

Meaning & Symbolism

Paintings of fashionable women carried real cultural weight in early modern Japan. They recorded urban dress, shifting styles, and the lively world of the entertainment and pleasure quarters, and they celebrated the idealised grace of the floating world (ukiyo). Shunshō, a leading master of the ukiyo-e school in the Edo period, was known for his actor prints and his paintings of beauties. This work, dated 1783–89, shows the mature skill for which he is remembered: human grace rendered through careful attention to posture and costume.

On This Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own image, so the figure's silhouette becomes the edge of the object itself. The scroll's vertical format and single standing figure suit smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops and journals, where the black kimono and gold ground can be seen at a glance. Each sticker carries the same design as the scroll, reduced to a single, portable figure.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-woman-in-a-black-kimono-178389-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787965048
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-woman-in-a-black-kimono-178389-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
