Charcoal black sets the strongest lines, while ochre yellow, peach, grey-green and dusty rose fill the surrounding space. A bamboo or reed fence and tall grass frame the figure, and the striped robe draws the eye down to the crouched pose. The composition is a study of posture: the body's angles, not the backdrop, carry the drama. Shunshō's signature, 春章, sits within the print as a small inscribed mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kikunojo was one of the most celebrated stage actors of his day, and he specialised in female roles. Prints like this one turned that performance into collectible celebrity imagery, so a single pose carried the stagecraft, the star and the stylised gender play of Edo theatre. The Katsukawa school, of which Shunshō was a leading master, made actor portraits that recorded how the theatre looked and felt to its audiences in the 1770s.

Designed for the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the vertical frame, the reeds and the crouched figure keep their shape once applied. Placed on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a flat window pane, the print reads as a single object rather than a rectangle of paper. For collectors of ukiyo-e and fans of kabuki, it brings one of the period's most dynamic actor studies into everyday surroundings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-third-segawa-kikunojo-as-a-woman-in-a-crouching-position-1778-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-844-alt-3.webp?v=1785707247
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-third-segawa-kikunojo-as-a-woman-in-a-crouching-position-1778-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
