Behind him, a man holds a bamboo-patterned fan. A tall vertical panel sets the stage, and a diagonal cherry blossom branch cuts across the upper space, breaking the rigid verticals. The palette is restrained: cream, pale grey, mustard yellow, black and rust red, with the robes and the faces carrying the emphasis.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print is an actor study, a yakusha-e, in which the sitter's identity and the detail of costume matter as much as the likeness. Here the stage roles of monks let two popular performers display the expressive range of Kabuki while the Buddhist imagery of robes and shaven heads frames the theatre as its own kind of ritual. The cherry blossom is a conventional emblem of transience, and its presence gives the scene a seasonal note. Shunshō worked within the Katsukawa school, and the print stands as a record of 18th-century stage performers and of Edo-period woodblock craft.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the figures, the fan and the blossom branch can read as a single shape rather than a framed rectangle. Each detail of the robes and crest reaches the edge of the cut, which suits a print built on silhouette and costume. Placed on a laptop, journal or notebook, the design brings a piece of Kabuki theatre into an everyday object, and it rewards a closer look at the carved lines of the woodblock.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-third-sawamura-sojuro-the-second-ichikawa-monnosuke-as-buddhist-monks-1791-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-836-alt-3.webp?v=1785707389
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-third-sawamura-sojuro-the-second-ichikawa-monnosuke-as-buddhist-monks-1791-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
